iPhone Screen Sizes

I would like to say a few things to those people complaining about how Apple didn’t make a larger screen on the new iPhone. Well, I must say that I was never expecting one in the first place, so when it didn’t happen, I wasn’t upset. Here is why I didn’t expect one, and why Apple WILL NOT not be changing the screen size anytime soon.

1. If the screen size is increased, the pixels per inch decreases. This would make the Retina Display quality be lower than the previous version. That would be a downgrade to people who care about really high quality resolutions.

2. If the pixels per inch was kept the same, that means any specialized graphics would have to be changed in EVERY application. Apple would have to redo the standard controls, and all developers would have to, once again, tweak their apps for the screen. This would be a major inconvenience.

3. If the screen is made larger, the bezel will be smaller. This will allow for A LOT of accidental input on the screen. This would be very upsetting for an end-user.

4. If the bezel is kept the same size, then the overall phone would have to be larger. This would be terrible for people who are so used to hold the original-sized device. In addition, if the PPI is kept the same on the screen, then touch elements will be slightly repositioned. This would mean that people who are so used to the current system, would have to break habits of common places where they put their fingers.

5. Also, if the phone is larger, that means a lot of accessories, cases, and docking stations would have to be replaced. This would be a major inconvenience for the manufactures, and the end-users. The iPhone/iPod third-party ecosystem is so huge. A lot of consumer’s docking stations (etc.) would not work, and the customers would be very unhappy. Then, they would have to spend even MORE money just to get them changed once they come out.

So guys, please, please, PLEASE, think things though more before you complain about a move that a company makes. Especially from a company like Apple. They have rationale for what they’re doing. And don’t say they don’t. Because they do. The iPhone has earned the JD Powers Association award six times in a row, and it’s the #1 Smartphone in the US in terms of market share and customer satisfaction. Apple knows what they’re doing guys, just trust them. I sure do.
